For this project we studied animations, by the end of this project we made our own animation. We achieved this by doing various steps throughout our projects, this helped us gain knowledge about animations and different kinds of motion.

Research –  During this project i done continuous research throughout. This helped as i was able to understand the values of animation, what looks successful and what type of animations are most common/ popular. At the start of this project i started looking at depression and social anxiety, i decided on these topics as i feel they are not widely spoken about although it has a huge impact on many peoples lives. I decided to aim my animation at 16-22 year old of both genders, my reasoning for this age range is because from my research there is a growing number of young individuals that struggle with depression and/or social anxiety that are not seeking help.

Pre-production/ Planning – For my Pre-production i planned for my final animation. i decided i was going to draw my animation, to draw my animation i used fine liner and water, i only drew one image of a face with no expression. I then scanned and imported the image into Photoshop and used the liquefying tool and step by step dripped different aspects of the face, i saved every frame which had me end up with 80 plus frames for my animation. I decided to do it this way as i found that it was the most time efficient, I then imported each frame into Premier Pro and made my final animation. To be able to get to this stage i done various mood boards, mind maps, and storyboards so that i was able to achieve the look that i wanted.

How it went – I feel this project went well as it helped me gain knowledge in both animations and depression/ social anxiety. I feel this project also helped me gain knowledge in Photoshop and Premier Pro. The things that i think could be improved is the amount of research as i feel that it was not in depth enough. This has been submitted for use to the Y services to make them aware for the individuals that are not aware that they help with all different aspects.

Graphic design elements of composition

Balance – This helps an image etc look balanced as dark colours will naturally have a heavier feel to them so depending of the style/theme that u want to image to give.

Emphasis – This is when you make a specific element stand out through colour, text, pattern etc. Also placing elements of the image where the eye would naturally been drawn to.

Rhythm – A strong sound, pattern or movement that is repeated, this is often used in any design aspect.

Skill – Seven essential skills for graphic design –

  • Communication – Understanding what a client wants from a design, and successfully creating the product.
  • Typography – Being able to make written language that is visually appealing.
  • Adobes creative apps – Adobe illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop etc.
  • Interactive media – Design products that actively engage a user.
  • Coding – having the understanding of HTML is important.
  • Branding – To be able to understands the client brand/purpose.
  • Delivering presentations – Having the ability to take complex data and present it in a clear and easy way for others to understand.

Research (Social Anxiety/ Depression)

Social Anxiety – this disorder often starts at your teenage years, for some people it gets better with age although for many people it does not go away on its own. People with social anxiety often dread everyday activities such as meeting new people, starting conversations, speaking on the phone, find it difficult to do things while people are watching as they feel they are constantly being judged by everyone else. In these situations they can feel sick, sweat, tremble, be physically sick and sometimes have panic attacks as part of the symptoms. Ways to battle social anxiety are seeing your GP, behavioural therapy, antidepressant medication, support groups and many more. Social anxiety can effect anyone as it is common but it often effects teenagers/ young adults, and approximately 6 million people struggle with it in the UK alone.

Depression – depression effects people in many different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms. Most people go through days of feeling down, but when you are depressed you can feel down for weeks and/or months. Sometimes there can be a trigger for depression such as bereavement, loosing your job and sometimes even having a baby. People with family history of depression are more likely to experience it themselves, but you can also become depressed for no obvious reason. Depression can be handled with medication and also therapy and the treatment you are given depends on the severity of your depression.

David Hockney (animation research)

David Hockey was born 9th July 1937, he is an English painter, drafts man, print maker, stage designer, and photographer. He contributed to the pop art movement of the 1960’s, and is considered as one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century.

He has owned a house and studio in London and Bridlington, and also California where he has lived since 1964. On 15th November 2018 his Pool with two figures painting was sold in New York city for £7 million, becoming the most expensive piece of art from a living artist sold at auction. David  Hockney is a homosexual and studied the love between two gay people throughout is portraiture.

The Twelve Principles of Animation

  1. Squash and Stretch – often used for 3D objects to make the movement of the object/ character more exaggerated.
  2. Anticipation – used as preparation for the main animation.
  3. Arcs – this technique helps make the animation more expressive and not as stiff than action on a straight path.
  4. Ease in and Ease out – the term for a motion that starts slow and then accelerates (ease-in) and then an animation that starts fast and slows down is (ease-out).
  5. Appeal – the quality of a final animation that interests a viewer.
  6. Timing – the speed of an action.
  7. Solid Drawing – 2D animation – a solid drawing focusing on the weight, volume, and the balance.
  8. Exaggeration – this helps create realism or a specific style, it can either look static or dull.
  9. Pose to Pose – focusing on the main key poses and then using intermediate frames to make the character look as if it is moving.
  10. Staging – a presentation so that the idea is clear, this can be done by mood, personality, expressions and action.
  11. Secondary Action –
  12. Follow Trough

Ink Manipulation (Animation)

For this task, i used ink and a pipette to distribute my ink in the page. i designed a simple pattern using the colours of red and yellow, i chose these colours as they work well together, after achieving the pattern that i had envisioned i then used a thin wooden stick to spread the dotted colours around so that they ran into each other so that it gave an interesting effect.

After i then used black ink and bleach to practice for my final animation, i feel that the use of bleach and ink did not work for me so in my final animation i feel that fine liner and water would work better as i have previously used that technique in the past i feel it would give the correct effect for what i would like my animation to look like as you are able to drip etc the fine liner and water.

Research (Animation)

Different types of animation

  1. hand-drawn
  2. CGI (computer generated imagery)
  3. stop motion
  4. cut out animation
  5. live-action

Hand drawn – to make movement frame by frame, a technique where you draw by hand. Allows good quality and originality but can also take a long time, due to the amount of detail that may be needed.

Rotoscoping – Animators trace live-action movement, frame by frame.

Cel Animation – A cel, short for celluloid, is a transparent sheet on which objects are drawn or painted for traditional, hand-drawn animation.

Limited animation – Limited animation is a process of making animated cartoons that does not redraw entire frames, but often reuses common parts between other frames.

Stop motion – sub genres: include Claymation, Model Animation and now Legomation.

My Idea – i will be doing the hand drawn animation technique, i would like it to start with a normal portrait drawing and then throughout the animation the characters face will slowly melt, nearing to the end i will reverse the animation and the ending so the first image will also be the last image. This animation will be in black and white to enhance the shadows etc, another reason for not adding colour is because of the time we have to complete this task.

  2. Multiple Exposure
  3. Fragmentation
